Newsletter April 2020: What We’ve Learned from the Pandemic


The most common question we are being asked is “what do you think of the coronavirus?” This is a complicated answer and it appears that what we wrote in the last newsletter some six weeks ago is still today’s reality. Here’s what we said, “There is no doubt that the coronavirus is a deadly virus – it is highly contagious, people are dying, and governments are trying to figure out how to contain it.”

In this newsletter we will look at what some of the experts are saying and what they are doing to protect themselves and their families. The experts all agree that their nutritional and supplement support protocols for the immune system should be maintained at least through the summer and likely continued in some reduced form after that for ongoing protection against the next unnamed virus. While supporting the immune system is Job #1 right behind it is Job #2 – reducing inflammation. In the March Newsletter we encouraged the SHAPE ReClaimed program as the best way we know to rapidly reduce inflammation through diet and lifestyle. Yes, it is an even greater challenge now with many of us homebound and only steps away from the refrigerator, but still extremely important to be considered.

If you are not ready for the full program we encourage you to decrease your consumption of white sugar (it reduces immune system functioning for up to five hours after consumption) and other inflammatory foods such as white flour products, processed and refined grains and cereals, and refined oils (margarine, vegetable oil, soybean oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, canola oil). Also, consider taking the SHAPE homeopathic drops which are immune system boosting, anti-inflammatory, and can help suppress hunger.

The third component is stress. All our stress levels have dramatically increased – fear of the virus, the uncertainty of the future (when will it be “normal” again?), being homebound, etc. And as you might guess increased stress places more burden on the immune system. We encourage you to explore ways to reduce stress including light exercise, deep breathing, meditation, and doing things you enjoy – going for a walk, listening to music, playing music, etc.

First, the consensus.
Everyone agrees it is important to support the immune system. The March newsletter (click here: https://brwellness.com/newsletter-march-2020-what-weve-learned-from-the-coronavirus/) provides information and links to articles regarding immune system support. The experts believe the need for additional immune system support through supplementation will extend at least through the summer.

It has been found that Vitamin D can protect cells from viruses. There is an enzyme called ACE 2 (Angiotensin converting enzyme 2) that attaches to the outer surface of cells in the lungs, arteries, heart, kidney, and intestines. Apparently, ACE2 serves as the entry point into cells for some viruses. Vitamin D blocks or fills the receptor sites of the ACE2 so a virus can not get into the cell.

The coronavirus attacks the respiratory system – particularly the lungs. If you still smoke, this gives you another reason to stop. Smoking damages the epithelial cells of the lungs, making them more vulnerable to the virus. The condition of the epithelial cells in the young is much better than that of the elder population. This is one of the reasons the coronavirus is not affecting this part of the population.

A second reason is the difference in the amount of melatonin produced by the young and the old. There is a strong link between those who have contracted the coronavirus with multiple pre-existing inflammatory conditions (heart disease, diabetes, etc.). Melatonin helps to regulate NLRP3 inflammasomes which are involved with immune system activation. Melatonin reduces inflammation and is protective for the heart and brain. And for those of you concerned about the coming 5G deployment – melatonin is reduced by 5G.

And, a third reason for the difference between the young and the old is the thymus gland. This gland is at the center of our immune system and is significantly more active in children than older adults.
Vitamin C, Selenium, Zinc, and the herbs Andrographis and Echinacea also appear on everyone’s lists as key supplements to support the immune system. Andrographis has anti-furin properties. Furin is a substance that will worsen the virus. There have been some reports that the herbs produce what is called a cytokine storm which can worsen the condition of someone with a virus. This is not the case and these herbs have been found to be safe.

Now, more specifics from Drs. Brockenshire and Cass.
Here are some highlights from a webinar delivered by Drs. Brockenshire and Cass:

·        Do all you can to reduce stress. Vitamin B Complex from Physica is recommended. If there is deeper emotional distress and hormonal imbalances there are other supplements to consider. Buffered Magnesium with Taurine can also help with stress.
·        Sleep is very important. While we sleep our body regenerates damaged cells and supports the immune system. (The one benefit of all this craziness is that we have been getting a bit more sleep than prior – not rushing off to the office in the morning!)
·        Now is not a good time for a cleanse. It is more important to rest the body than stress it with a cleanse.
·        Reduce brain inflammation with Turmeric, ASURA, and Ginkgo.
·        There are several botanicals for prevention and recovery in the Physica and MediHerb lines he recommends. Here, the focus is on Thymus and Spleen support.
·        Be aware there is still lots of Flu A and B out in the public.

Here is Dr. Cass’s immune system protocol:
For adults: Start with 1-2 scoops of Camu Camu Vitamin C in water. Add to it 3 droppers of Olive Leaf Intrinsic, 3 droppers of Sambucus Intrinsic, 3 droppers of Myrrh Intrinsic, and 15 drops of Flu Milieu. Stir it up and drink. In addition, do 20 sprays of Solray-D and 3 capsules of Spleen LF. This is done twice per day. Also, do one full dropper of Sambucus before bed. (Please note: Dr. Brockenshire suggests 10 sprays of Solray-D per day. We think 10 sprays is sufficient unless you are in the high risk category)

For kids: 1-2 droppers per day of Echina Intrinsic and 1 dropper of Mycelia Intrinsic in pear or grape juice.

Newsletter March 2020: What We've Learned from the Coronavirus


We are writing this newsletter in mid-February before we leave for our vacation. It will magically arrive while we are in Argentina – one of the true benefits of modern technology! We are not sure what will transpire while we are away, but what we are writing now concerning what we have learned from the coronavirus should be true regardless.

There is no doubt that the coronavirus is a deadly virus – it is highly contagious, people are dying, and governments are trying to figure out how to contain it. This is a scenario we have seen before – the swine flu, SARS, Ebola, etc. Being in the natural health world we receive urgent information and commentaries from a variety of “natural health experts.” On the extreme side is the “Health Ranger” Mike Adams (https://naturalnews.com/ and https://www.healthrangerstore.com/), not as extreme there is Dr. Joseph Mercola (https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2020/02/04/novel-coronavirus.aspx), and there is the official government position of the  CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html). 

All these sites share a variety of information leaving us to sort out what is “true” and what is “fake news” – this we would characterize as not a benefit of modern technology! As always, we encourage you to gather information from all sides of the spectrum and then make an informed conclusion. We have made ours and here it is. Well, actually it is found below!

While the best way to stay healthy is to support your immune system, one of the best ways to be healthy is to not be overweight.
