September 2014 Newsletter - Back to School is for Everybody!!

It’s that time of year – back to school. Most of the college age kids are back and I’m officially an empty nester. Zach is back at Madison starting his Junior year (that’s hard to believe – already half way done!) and Mollie is in Boston starting her Freshman year. As I wrote last month I started my “back to school” in August with the trainings that I highlighted in my Special Edition newsletter a couple of weeks ago.

My “back to school” continues later this month when I head out to Denver for Back to School for Doctors. This is an annual event. It is my first time going, but I have listened to the recordings from several years and I’m truly excited to attend.
“Back to School” is really for everyone. In school we learn and as we learn we grow. And isn’t that what it is all about? Continuing our growth as productive and healthy humans. What better way to grow than to determine what your body needs on a nutritional level to support your mental and emotional growth.

Also, don’t forget about THE CLEANSE!! As we move towards the Fall season this is an excellent time to do the purification program. There is still a nice supply of fresh vegetables available. I still have a few of the books left from my earlier special, so if you decide to do a cleanse and haven’t yet received a book there is a free one waiting for you!

Experience The Power of Muscle Testing For Yourself

My Special Edition newsletter detailed my experience with Master muscle tester Dr. Joe Teff.   From these experiences I realized that muscle testing is important for all my clients and I now have the tools to do it beyond my previous knowledge level. In short that is why I am the most excited I’ve ever been about my nutrition practice. I am eager to share it with my current and future clients and help them improve their health and quality of life.

For those who missed it, here's a link to the Special Edition Newsletter: http://brwellness.blogspot.com/2014/08/newsletter-special-edition-why-im-so.html

My five clients who participated in the training session were all amazed and excited by their experience as well.  These insights have continued the past two weeks as I have muscle tested additional clients. What we are learning is truly astounding!

I encourage you to come in for a test. For existing clients it takes about a half hour.  So far I’m finding slight changes in supplement protocols and often the need for fewer supplements – I think that’s something everyone likes to hear – as that saves money!

Healthy Kids: Back to School Ideas

In the spirit of “back to school” here are a few ideas on nutrition for kids.  (Of course this information is good for adults too!)  Nutrition for kids is the most challenging aspects I face when working with clients.  While it is hard enough to get adults to eat healthier, kids are often a greater challenge.
The food producers and manufacturers have developed special foods that they call “kid’s food”.  If you take the time to read the list of ingredients you will find that most of it is not food and should not be consumed by anyone, particularly our children.  Our children are growing and need the healthiest foods available to properly fuel their minds and bodies.

The General Health Daily Fundamental Packet Makes it Easy for Your Kids at College and Significant Others

Earlier I mentioned both my kids are away at school.  While they both attempt to eat healthy, it can be quite the challenge!  To make sure they get daily basic nutrients, they are equipped with a supply of the General Health Daily Fundamental packets from Standard Process.

Each packet contains a multivitamin, a multimineral, and fish oil – the basic fundamental nutrients that we all need on a daily basis.  These packets are also great for our significant others (usually that means the boyfriends and husbands) who find it difficult to manage multiple vitamin bottles (we can also call this too lazy!!).

Get to the Heart of the Matter – September Specials at Direct Labs

Looks like this month’s specials at Direct Labs are the heart health tests.  I often talk about the importance of particle size of the LDL rather than the total amount. The NMR Lipid Profile test on sale this month is the test that provides that information. To view all the specials click here: http://www.directlabs.com/

The consumption of “kid’s food” and more sedentary lifestyles (lack of exercise, lots of television, computer, and video games) is having a major impact on the health of our youth.  And it’s not for the better!  Obesity among children aged 6 to 11 more than doubled in the past 25 years. The rate among adolescents aged 12 to 19 more than tripled.  Rates of child hood diabetes and cancer are also on the rise.

How do we get our kids to eat healthier foods? One successful strategy is to make subtle substitutions to the foods they like to eat.  Let’s take something as simple as the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  For the peanut butter use organic peanut butter that is nothing but peanuts and peanut oil.  Most commercial peanut butters contain added sugar and hydrogenated oil (trans- fats).  We know trans-fats are linked to cancer and that added sugar adds empty calories.  I stress the organic because peanuts are one of the most highly pesticided crops, so non-organic peanut butter will contain potential chemical residues and toxins.  An even healthier option would be to use organic almond butter.

For the bread I recommend sprouted bread as it is the healthiest bread option. It is made from wheat so for those with gluten intolerance will need to use a gluten free bread. For the jelly, find the most natural product you can.  Look for spreads that do not add sugar or have less sugar added.  The fruit already has plenty of sugar.

What are some other healthy substitutions?  A major area to look at is the carbohydrates. While carbohydrates can be a good source of energy, too many or a disproportionate share of the diet can lead to weight gain and a variety of other health problems. In today’s world our kids eat a lot of them – bread, rice, pasta, and salty snacks.  Our goal here is to simultaneously shift from the refined and processed white flour products to whole grains and at the same time introduce more vegetables into their diet.

In addition to the switch to sprouted breads, we can use brown rice instead of white rice and pasta from brown rice rather than refined wheat (the white pasta).  All of these substitutions taste virtually the same.  They just look a little different and that may turn off the kids. But, covered in tomato sauce they will never know the difference!

Then there are snacks.  The kids get home from school and they are hungry and it is not quite dinner time.  There are certainly some better choices than chips and dips.  Another societal norm is this idea of “snack food.”  Just like with “kid’s food” we need a little retraining.  What is a snack?   It is a small meal.  So, think of something healthy that would be part of a meal.  There’s nothing special about these foods, except that they are healthy.  I like to tell people not to worry about if something is considered “breakfast” food or “snack” food – just eat healthy food when you are hungry!

Here’s a list of some healthy snacks: hard boiled eggs; jerky (beef, bison, turkey, salmon – just be sure from a healthy source); organic cheese (cottage, cheddar); organic plain yogurt with your own fruit added; fruit salad; almond butter and celery; baby carrots and bean dip; broccoli with dip; blue corn chips with bean dip, guacamole, or salsa; loaded baked potato; nuts; and seeds.  See there’s plenty to choose from!

Newsletter Special Edition - Why I'm So Excited About The Future!

In my August newsletter I mentioned three upcoming trainings I had scheduled to attend in August and September. I have completed two of them. The information and learning was incredible - out of this world! And when I say out of this world I also refer to the world of “traditional or allopathic medicine” compared to the world of “healing.” What I experienced (either in a workshop or individual training session) was in the world of healing - healing through nutrition. To put it simply – I am now the most excited/”jazzed up” I have ever been regarding the future of my nutrition consulting practice and my ability to help my clients.

I can’t wait another two weeks for my September newsletter to share this news, so that’s why the Special Edition.

Here’s what happened:

The Symposium on Nutrition had four great speakers/healers. While they all had their own individual topics their main message was to use muscle testing. While there are a variety of proven muscle testing techniques to utilize, the practitioner needs to find the one that resonates and works best for them. Over the past few years I have used the muscle testing system called NRT (Nutrition Response Testing). I have used it with some clients, but not all. To be honest, I didn’t feel comfortable using it with everyone. I didn’t think it was for everyone. Until…

My second training was a private session with Dr. Joe Teff, a master practitioner and trainer. When planning the session he told me he only needed four hours and that would “blow my mind.” I was a little skeptical as the “official” NRT advanced training is hundreds of hours. He said he’d cut to the chase – teach me what I really needed to know. He did as promised. After four hours on August 16th my head was spinning. It took me several hours to compose myself and write out what I had experienced. My five clients who participated in the training session were all amazed and excited by their experience as well.  Here’s a link that describes the testing methodology I learned: http://optimumfunction.com/about-us/customized-nutrition-testing.html

From these experiences I realized that muscle testing is important for all my clients and I now have the tools to do it beyond my previous knowledge level. That is why this is the most excited I’ve ever been about my nutrition practice. I am eager to share it with my current and future clients and help them improve their health and quality of life.

I encourage you to come in for a test. For existing clients it takes about a half hour.  So far I’m finding slight changes in supplement protocols and often the need for fewer supplements – I think that’s something everyone likes to hear – as that saves money! To set an appointment call or e-mail.

The rest of the newsletter contains the profiles of these teachers and links to their websites.

Dr. Davis Brockenshire – Methylation and the Spleen
I first studied with Dr. Brockenshire in October of 2013 and this was my third workshop with him. He has many talents, but from him I have learned about the importance of methylation. To put it simply- our ability to methylate impacts all aspects of our life. The big three – how we detoxify ourselves, how we generate energy, and how our DNA repairs itself. That pretty much says it all. There is a saliva test which analyzes three genes (called SNPs) which tells us our methylation capacity. A significant segment of the population (myself included) do not methylate at full capacity. There’s a lot to this. If you want to learn more about it here’s some links:

Dr. Randy Tent – Cardiovascular and Viruses
You’ve heard me talk about Dr. Tent in a prior newsletter as my new nutrition hero. This was the first time I had the opportunity to see him live and he too lived up to his billing. He shared his nutritional protocols for supporting his patients who have heart issues and viruses.  His stories of helping people with blood clots, arterial clogging, and a variety of viruses was truly inspirational. As a result of his talks I signed up with a new supplement company that provides some of the specific products he spoke of. I have encouraged you before to view Dr. Tent’s YouTube video on the Rise of Autoimmune Diseases.

Dr. Chad Guess – Bringing it all Together
I met Dr. Guess in January of 2013 and this was the third workshop with him as well. However this one was different. He did not talk about nutrition. He talked about what to do Monday when we returned to our office. Most practitioners go to these workshops, hear all kinds of good stuff, say they will do it, but when they get back to the reality of their practice on Monday they just go back to doing what they always do!

Dr. Guess challenged us to make it different this time. He provided the tools and techniques to do the inner work you need to answer the basic questions of why am I doing this and what is my purpose. His session was highly motivational and inspiring.

Dr. Joe Teff – Master Practitioner and Teacher
The Symposium on Nutrition was the perfect lead in to my private session with Dr. Teff as described above. If you want to know more about Dr. Teff I have a link to his web site below.

This newsletter was a little longer than prior ones, but what the heck – it is still summer so you have time to read it!! When we are excited we talk more and in this case I write more. There is so much good to share! I feel truly blessed to have all these experiences come together this month and look forward to the future and helping my clients be as healthy as they want to be!
